The oldest fortress of the New World and the seafront promenade of Puerto Plata.
Built in the sixteenth century to defend the harbour from pirates, Fort San Felipe still guards the entrance to Puerto Plata bay. This guided walk covers the fortress and its small museum, the lighthouse, the Malecón promenade and the stories of the smugglers, corsairs and merchants who built the city.
