Snorkelling on the north coast: where and when
Apalo Tours · July 14, 2026

Sosúa bay is the easiest place to start. The reef begins a short swim from the sand, the bay is protected from the swell and visibility is often above fifteen metres in summer.
Further west, Cayo Arena has the healthiest coral on the north coast, with dense stands of elkhorn and clouds of reef fish. It is reached by boat from Punta Rucia.
Catamaran trips out of Puerto Plata stop at reef sites between Cofresí and Sosúa, which are good for a first experience with crew in the water.
Conditions matter more than the site. The sea is calmest from May to September, mornings are usually clearer than afternoons, and visibility drops for a day or two after heavy rain.
Wear a rash guard rather than sunscreen on your back, never stand on coral and keep a respectful distance from turtles and rays.
